AMTIL's current projects include:
Industry Skills Adviser – Advanced Manufacturing
In August of 2006 AMTIL was invited to a Briefing Meeting held by the Victorian Department of Education and Training. The briefing session was to inform organisations with a strong commitment to small and medium enterprises (SME’s) about the department's Industry Skills Advisors (ISA) project. The Industry Skills Advisers will work with small and medium enterprises in targeted sectors to identify training needs and stimulate demand for workplace training programs. They will facilitate the connection between SME’s and training providers whilst providing advice and support. The ISA’s will negotiate training delivery, facilitate recognition of prior learning and collaborate with the specialist centres contained with the TAFE colleges.
Over the next two years ISA’s will be established in six areas of industry by the following organisations;
1. Advanced Manufacturing – Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL)
2. Competitive Manufacturing – Swinburne University of TAFE
3. Scientific and Medical Equipment Instrumentation – Australian Industry Group
4. Logistics and Supply Chain Management – Victoria University of TAFE
5. Environmental Industries – Ballarat University of TAFE
6. Packaging Technologies – Australian Industry Group
AMTIL submitted a tender for the Industry Skills Adviser for Advanced Manufacturing and was successful. This is a great outcome as it builds on the learnings of the Industry Liaison Agent (ILA) project of a few years ago. The objectives are similar in that both projects negotiate training for current employees. The main difference is the differentiation between sectors.
Since securing the tender AMTIL is very keen to negotiate the best possible value for money outcome for Victorian SME’s in the Advanced Manufacturing industry. Our project will explore a method of linking the training providers to industry and shows early signs of interest and excitement. The selected training providers have so far shown a willingness to engage with SME’s in this technically very demanding and dynamic industry.

The LYNX Project
AMTIL have recently been successful in seeking funding from our industry members and the Commonwealth government – AusIndustry for the LYNX Project. This significant project will provide a considerable impact on our advanced manufacturers.
The LYNX project will connect individual manufacturing industry members to the latest, world-leading manufacturing technologies, methodologies and techniques (TMTs) to encourage the early adoption of these innovations. While manufacturers may have already implemented one or more of these TMTs individually, this project will demonstrate that implementing and mastering TMTs in all aspects of manufacturing has compounded benefits.
The LYNX Project has a range of defined objectives, which will be achieved through the demonstration and promotion of early adoption in leading edge technologies, methodologies and techniques (TMTs) for the precision engineering and advanced manufacturing industries. AMTIL aims to achieve this through a range of activities briefly defined below:
Webinars - Online, (and in real-time) demonstrations of TMTs already in place in various organisations around the world.
Factory of the Future - Physical assembly of leading TMTs to create what a factory of the future may incorporate to demonstrate at Australia's leading manufacturing trade fair.
TMT Satellite Demonstrations - Dismantling the Factory of the Future and distributing the various physical and business process TMTs to various locations around the country.
TMT Satellite Workshops - workshops to assist in the dissemination of the theory behind the satellite demonstrations.
Factory Blitz - Utilising various TMTs, a number of organisations will undergo a "makeover". Members of industry will be invited to visit the site to observe the implementation of these innovations
Case Studies - Dissemination of information gained through the activities above will be published in AMTIL's magazine and on AMTIL's website.
All members are encouraged to take an interest as this will certainly provide benefit to those that are involved and the greater advanced manufacturing community.

National Skill-Up & Placement Project (UP)
AMTIL is working together with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and four State Governments to deliver an Employer Demand Demonstration Project which is the first national project of its kind in Australia. This project will encompass Queensland (funded through Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative), Victoria (funded through the DVC Workforce Participation Partnerships initiative), New South Wales and South Australia (funded through South Australia Works).
The project aims to:
- skill-up job seekers nationally to a minimum Cert I/maximum, Cert II Engineering Production (CNC machining)
- provide relevant, industry work experience opportunities, provide mentoring assistance in collaboration with TAFE and AMTIL
- provide placement assistance for job seekers into successful employment in collaboration with Job Network and AMTIL.
The courses will run from July 2006 and target unemployed participants from the following unemployment groups:
- Mature aged
- Unemployed
- Return to work
- Disabilities
Skills learnt during the training encompass the include following :
- CNC Operation and Job Monitoring
- CNC Setting and Programming (Basic)
- General Machining (inc. conventional systems)
- Hand & Power Tools
- Tool Grinding Offhand
- Occupational Health and Safety, Quality Procedures and Job Tracking systems
- Engineering Calculations
- Engineering Drawing
- Computers in Engineering
Job Opportunities :
AMTIL felt it was important for this project to include work experience as it would allow :
- Participants to demonstrate skills developed whilst in training
- Employers to potentially trial participants for ongoing employment
- Provide the participant with relevant Employer references
The types of positions that trained participants may be qualified for after successfully completing the training could be entry level CNC machine operators, trades assistants, production/process workers, warehousing, fabricator, technical customer service, assembly workers and machine maintenance. This Certificate II course is recognised under the Federal Metals Industry award as having the skills that attribute to a C12 award wage.
If participants gain employment as an entry level “CNC Machine operator”, the next career step may be a “CNC Machine Setter”; someone who can edit CNC programming and select the required tooling for the job. The participants have been given the basic skills to advance in this area, further assisting their career growth and attraction to employers.
