Industry Skills Adviser – Advanced Manufacturing
In August of 2006 AMTIL was invited to a Briefing Meeting held by the Victorian Department of Education and Training. The briefing session was to inform organisations with a strong commitment to small and medium enterprises (SME’s) about the department's Industry Skills Advisors (ISA) project. The Industry Skills Advisers will work with small and medium enterprises in targeted sectors to identify training needs and stimulate demand for workplace training programs. They will facilitate the connection between SME’s and training providers whilst providing advice and support. The ISA’s will negotiate training delivery, facilitate recognition of prior learning and collaborate with the specialist centres contained with the TAFE colleges.

Over the next two years ISA’s will be established in six areas of industry by the following organisations;
1. Advanced Manufacturing – Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL)
2. Competitive Manufacturing – Swinburne University of TAFE
3. Scientific and Medical Equipment Instrumentation – Australian Industry Group
4. Logistics and Supply Chain Management – Victoria University of TAFE
5. Environmental Industries – Ballarat University of TAFE
6. Packaging Technologies – Australian Industry Group

AMTIL submitted a tender for the Industry Skills Adviser for Advanced Manufacturing and was successful. This is a great outcome as it builds on the learnings of the Industry Liaison Agent (ILA) project of a few years ago. The objectives are similar in that both projects negotiate training for current employees. The main difference is the differentiation between sectors.

Since securing the tender AMTIL is very keen to negotiate the best possible value for money outcome for Victorian SME’s in the Advanced Manufacturing industry. Our project will explore a method of linking the training providers to industry and shows early signs of interest and excitement. The selected training providers have so far shown a willingness to engage with SME’s in this technically very demanding and dynamic industry.
