Marc Newson
Clean Technologies Supplier Advocate
Australian Government

Since graduating in 1992, Marc has had an extensive career in environmental management and product development. He spent the first part of his career assessing the environmental performance of businesses in the manufacturing and engineering, power, mining, shipping and food sectors in Australia and overseas.

Throughout this period he worked with the Federal and State governments on improving environmental reporting, negotiating cooperative agreements for emission reduction, designing performance metrics and training teams on environmental management techniques.

In 1998 he researched the corporate sustainability practices of major companies in Australia and overseas, which provided a blueprint for a career focused on product development.

Initially his work focused on environmental and social risk products to support mining finance and rating schemes, supporting organizations such as the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation. He was then seconded into a role to support corporate governance reforms, and this led to opportunities to develop products for board effectiveness, the efficiency and effectiveness of the corporate finance function, and information management services.

Since 2008 he has led a team supporting businesses developing and deploying carbon market solutions. This was implemented as a horizontal industry play supporting the growth of Australia’s entrepreneurs whose technologies and products allow others to respond to the opportunities and challenges from climate-related regulatory reform.

He has delivered ‘investor ready’ tools for cleantech investment, cleantech market analysis studies for industry bodies and governments to support policy development and funding mechanisms, ranked the Australian states for their investment attractiveness for large scale renewable energy, and led executive carbon market workshops.
